Skyroot Vikram-1 Launch: India’s First Private Orbital Rocket Creates History on July 18, 2026

Today, July 18, 2026, India has entered a new era in space exploration. Hyderabad-based space startup Skyroot Aerospace has successfully launched its skyroot rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. This is not just another rocket launch; it is India’s first private orbital-class rocket to reach space.

What is Vikram-1? Mission Aagaman Explained

Vikram-1 is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space program. The mission is codenamed ‘Aagaman’ which means arrival.

Unlike Skyroot’s previous sub-orbital launch Vikram-S in 2022, Skyroot is an orbital-class vehicle. This means it has the power to place satellites into a stable orbit around the Earth.

Key Specifications of Skyroot:

  • Height: 20 meters (Almost 6-storey building)
  • Diameter: 1.7 meters
  • Total Mass: ∼14,000 kg
  • Payload Capacity: 300 kg to 500 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
  • Structure: All Carbon Composite Body – making it ultra-light and super strong
  • Stages: 3 stages with advanced stage separation technology

3-Stage Technology That Makes It Special

What makes skyroot truly world-class is its engineering.

Stage 1 – Kalam-1200: The first stage is powered by the Kalam-1200 solid motor. It generates massive initial thrust to lift off. It has 3D-printed engine nozzles and 4 fins for stability.

Stage 2 – Kalam-250: The second stage provides mid-flight thrust. It also uses a 3D-printed solid rocket motor and a carbon composite body, reducing production time by 80%.

Stage 3 – Raman Engine: The final stage is the most precise. It uses a 3D-printed hypergolic liquid engine called Raman. This stage is responsible for the final orbital insertion and accurate satellite deployment. It can restart and perform precise maneuvers.

Other highlights include Advanced Flight Avionics & Navigation System for real-time guidance, Pneumatic Stage Separation for low-shock reliability, and a Thermal Protection System.

Why is This Launch a Game-Changer for India?

  1. Private Space Revolution: Till now, only ISRO could launch orbital rockets in India. With Vikram-1, India has officially opened its space sector for private players, just like SpaceX did for NASA in the US.
  2. Cost-Effective Launch: Skyroot claims Vikram-1 offers launch within days, not months, at 40-50% lower cost than traditional rockets. This is perfect for small satellite companies, universities, and startups.
  3. Make in India in Space: 90% of the rocket is built in India with 3D-printing technology. This boosts Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
  4. Global Market: The small satellite launch market is worth $10 Billion by 2030. With Vikram-1, India can become the go-to hub for cheap and reliable launches.

Skyroot Aerospace: The Story Behind the Startup

Skyroot was founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka. They left their secure jobs at ISRO to build India’s first private rocket company.

In 2022, they launched Vikram-S, India’s first private rocket (sub-orbital). In 2026, they have done what many thought was impossible – an orbital launch.

The company is backed by investors like GIC Singapore and aims to launch at least 5-6 rockets every year from 2027. Skyroot Vikram-1.

What Happens Next?

According to ISRO and IN-SPACe, if today’s payload deployment is successful, Skyroot will get commercial clearance. Already, 3 international clients from Japan and Europe have signed contracts for Vikram-1’s next flights.

For Trendy Insights readers, this means more jobs, more innovation, and India finally leading the global space race.

Conclusion: The sky is no longer the limit. With Vikram-1, Skyroot has proven that Indian startups can build rockets that can compete with the world’s best. This is just the beginning of India’s private space journey.

FAQ Section (For SEO):
Q1: When was Vikram-1 launched? A: July 18, 2026 from Sriharikota.
Q2: What is the payload capacity of Vikram-1? A: 300kg to 450km Low Earth Orbit.
Q3: Is Vikram-1 reusable? A: No, currently it is expendable, but Skyroot is working on reusable tech.
